Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Shepherd's Pie

Usually shepherd's pie is made with mince lamb. I used beef, and I cut it into small cubes, but you can use lamb if you prefer. In addition, Shepherd's pie has mashed potatoes on the top. I used soya milk and dairy-free butter in my mash, but you can use regular milk and butter, if you are not allergic to dairy products.

Ingredients (for the mash)

- 1 kg potatoes, peeled and cut into big chunks
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp non-dairy butter (or regular butter)
- 1 cup soya milk (or regular milk)
- Freshly-grated nutmeg
- 1 egg yolk beaten

Method
  1. Put the potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water. Add the salt and put on the heat to boil for 10-15 minutes.
  2. When the potatoes are tender, drain and mash with a potato masher.
  3. Add the butter, the milk and the egg yolk to the mash.
  4. Add the nutmeg and more salt if needed. Mix well.

Ingredients (for the base)

- 500 g. beef cut into small cubes
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil (I use canola oil)
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
- 3 carrots, cubed
- 1 small can corn (150 g.)
- 150 grams frozen peas
- 1 tbsp corn flour
- ½ cup red wine (optional)
- 1 tbsp Heinz Worcestershire sauce(gluten-free)*
- 1 tsp tomato paste
- 1 cup water
- 1 tsp salt
- Freshly-ground black pepper
- Freshly-grated nutmeg
- 1 tsp fresh rosemary

Method
  1. Put the oil in a pot on the stove and add the diced onion. Add ½ tsp of salt and stir well until the onion is translucent and soft.
  2. Add the carrots and stir for 2-3 minutes, then add the garlic.
  3. Add the cubed meat and stir well until the meat is cooked. Add the remaining salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and rosemary.
  4. Add the corn and green peas. Mix well and then add the corn flour and mix until the meat is well coated.
  5. Add the wine (if using), the Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste and stir well.
  6. Add the water and let the mix simmer for 10 minutes. Put off the heat. Transfer the meat mix to an ovenproof glass plate and use a piping bag to pipe the mashed potatoes on top of the meat mix.
  7. Bake the shepherd's pie in a pre-heated oven on 225°C for 20-25 minutes.

Yields: four portions

* There are some Worcestershire sauce brands in the market that are gluten-free like Heinz, Lea and Perrins, French's, Kroger, and others.
