Popcorn is a must every
time we go to the movies. Moreover, corn is gluten-free, right? So eating
popcorn should not cause any problem! Wrong!
Movie theater popcorn is
gluten-free and microwave popcorn is also gluten-free, but every time I eat a
portion I feel bloated and in pain. It seems that certain additives are found
in microwave and movie theater popcorn and these additives cause allergic
reactions to me. Therefore, the best way to eat and enjoy popcorn without pain
is to make your own. To save on calories, you can invest in an air popcorn
machine where you do not need to add any oil or butter. Still, I prefer the old
method of making popcorn, in a pot on the stove! I make both salt popcorn and
caramel popcorn and I enjoy both anytime anywhere!!
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil (I
use canola oil)
- ½ cup corn kernels
- ½ tsp salt
For the caramel
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- 3 tbsp. golden syrup
- ½ stick butter (50 gr)
or 50 grams of non-dairy shortening if you're allergic to milk products
- 1/8 tsp cream of tartar
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
(Bicarbonate of Soda)
Method
- Put the canola oil in a pot on the stove.
- Add the corn kernel, and cover the pot.
- Keep it on medium heat until all the kernels pop.
- It will yield around 8 cups.
- Take half the quantity, add the salt, mix well, and serve.
- For the caramel popcorn, prepare the caramel by putting all the ingredients, except for the baking soda and cream of tartar in a sauce pan and let it come to a boil.
- Let it simmer slowly for 5 minutes.
- Put off the heat and add the baking soda and cream of tartar.
- Mix well for the mixture to bubble.
- Put the other half quantity of popcorn on a baking sheet and spread them.
- Drizzle the caramel over them and mix well.
- Be careful not to burn yourself because the caramel is very hot.
- Put the baking sheet in a preheated oven (160° C) and stir from time to time for about 25 minutes.
- Put the popcorn in bowls and serve warm.
- You can mix the salt popcorn and the caramel popcorn together and serve salty and sweet popcorn in one bowl.
Yields: Four cups salt popcorn
and Four cups caramel popcorn
